The Open Sky: Royal Watercolour Society Artists in Newlyn

1.30pm Friday 5th November, Phoenix Cinema Screen 4

The Open Sky: RWS Artists in Newlyn is the second in a trilogy of documentaries featuring professional Royal Watercolour Society artists who travel to Cornwall to paint in the glorious light and to discuss their work and outlook.

The title of this film comes from Stanhope Forbes (1857-1947), leading light of the Newlyn School of painters, who wrote of their mission, ‘to set up our easels in country districts, where we could pose our models and attack our work, in sunshine or in shadow, under the open sky.’

This film is a fascinating record of four RWS artists, Paul Newland, Simon Pierse, Richard Sorrell and Jenny Wheatley, as they come to Newlyn to follow in the footprints of Forbes and his contemporaries.

Art enthusiasts and anyone who would enjoy seeing the south coast's seascapes through new eyes -- on the big screen -- will appreciate the photography and gentle pace of The Open Sky.

We are sorry to report that director Stephen Gammond, who had planned to introduce the film and offer a Q&A afterwards, cannot attend the screening.

NOTE: The Open Sky and the other two films in the series, Into the Light: RWS Artists in St Ives and The Sunshine Painters: RWS Artists in Lamorna, are also available for purchase through the Royal Watercolour Society.
