Board Shorts 2009

Board Shorts 2009 offers up a stoke-filled array of unique perspectives on surfing, surf culture and the power of surfing in people's lives, on Saturday 7th November in the Stannary Bar at UCF's Tremough campus in Penryn.

If you love surfing, you will love Board Shorts. It is almost compulsory to attend this once-a-year surf movie extravaganza, presented live by The Surf Screen's Christiaan Bailey:

"I present and screen films all over the country and Board Shorts really is the premium event of the year. It's the only event where an audience can get an such an immediate insight into the diverse range of perspectives on surfing and see amazing films on the big screen that you would otherwise never see. It's truly a one-off, always fun, always inspiring, and I would recommend that anyone with any love for the sea attend this amazing event."

This year we have films from established filmmakers like Mr B (creator of Performing Monkey's, Driven, Substance and 21 Days Later), Ollie Banks (600 Miles) and an archival gem from surfing legend Rod Sumpter.

Freelance cartoonist Robbie McIntosh has provided us with an animated treat, and there is a fantastic selection of short films from less known but equally enthusiastic filmmakers such as Izzy Charman, Fionn Crow Howieson and Mark Roberts.

Amidst the music, inspiring imagery, hooting and hollering, we will be screening this selection of short surf-themed films (all under 10 min each) in competition to win the coveted 'Best of Board Shorts Award'. The films will be judged by a panel of experts, including professional surfers, surf film reviewers, exhibitors and collectors, plus the winning film will have the opportunity to be screened all over the UK through The Surf Screen.

Films in Competition is only the beginning. After a brief intermission, we will also be screening the mesmerising and energising Picaresque, by Mikey De Temple and Dustin Miller, all shot on 16mm film in Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, California, Florida, New England, New York and France. This film is a step into a new generation of surfing, documenting a fresh crew of surfers from around the globe including Harrison Roach, Christian Wach and Matt Chojnacki, all cut to an upbeat contemporary soundtrack. This spectacular film will be followed by prize giving, a generous raffle and music from some fine home-brewed DJs, guaranteeing great dancing through to the early morning.

It is the UK’s only short surf film event!

See you there!
